Brazilians wishing to visit or study in Australia need a visa, which can be for tourism or for students. Here's how each one works and which one is right for you
For each type of trip to Australia, there is an ideal type of visa! Before leaving Brazil or your home country, you need to apply for a visa at the Australian Embassy. But there are several types of visa for Australiaand each one is suitable for a certain traveler profile and travel objective.
There are several categories and subcategories of visas for Australia - and many of them can only be applied for when the traveler is already on Australian soil. In this article, we'll look at visas that must be applied for before the trip, when the tourist or student is still in their home country.
Because of this complexity, it is highly recommended that travelers seek the help of a specialized agency such as Good Day Education. Elaine Roma, Visa Specialist at the company, stresses that it is important for travelers to apply for the correct category. The agency offers all the necessary support to students, guiding and helping them through all the stages of the visa application.
"When the documentation is approved, it arrives in digital format, in PDF, and printed," says Elaine. "We send a message to the students letting them know that they've been approved. It's always a happy moment!"
Once the client's visa has been approved, Elaine arranges an orientation talk. "I talk about what documents you need to bring, what you can and can't pack, how to behave at immigration and more," she says. "Students can also ask questions and we answer them all. Families can also take part in this conversation."

Visas for Australia: students, tourism
Student Visa
Value: $660 (card fee already included; the amount is subject to change, depending on Australian immigration)
Analysis time: about 30 days
Length of stay in Australia: for the duration of the course
Ideal for those who want to:
- take an English course of more than 3 months
- take an undergraduate or postgraduate course
The Student Visa is necessary for those who want to take long-term courses (more than 12 weeks) and allows students to work during their stay. "For this reason, it is a very popular visa for young people, because it opens up the possibility of being able to support themselves in Australia while they study," says Elaine Roma.
It is worth noting that the visa allows students to work up to 48 hours a fortnight from July 2023. Discover tips for combining work and courses here.
The student visa is valid for the entire duration of the course and, at the end, Australian immigration grants the student an extra month or two so that they can enjoy their vacations.
To get a student visa, you need proof of ties to Brazil, such as employment or close family members living in the country. Sometimes immigration also asks for financial proof: the student needs to show that they have the equivalent of $1755 per month during their stay in Australia. "This can be demonstrated with the balance in the student's current account or that of a close relative, such as parents, grandparents or uncles," explains Elaine.
In addition, the student needs to undergo a medical examination by a health professional affiliated with the Australian Embassy.
Generally, the student waits around 30 days for immigration to analyze all the documents and approve the visa. According to Elaine, it is recommended that students apply at least three months before their trip.
Visitor Visa
Value: $152.10 (card fee already included; the amount is subject to change, depending on Australian immigration)
Analysis time: up to 60 days
Length of stay in Australia: from 3 to 12 months
Ideal for those who want to:
- take a short-term English course
- visit the country on vacation
- visit a relative who lives there
The Visitor Visa is the ideal visa for those going to Australia on a trip or for those wishing to take a short course. The tourist visa is valid for one year and generally allows travelers to stay in Australia for three months.
It is possible to stay for six or 12 months, but for this you need to have a well-founded justification. "For example, the embassy may grant a longer period of stay to someone who has a pregnant daughter in Australia and is waiting for the baby to be born," says Elaine. "But you really have to have a very good reason. Generally, the length of stay granted is three months."
Elaine also points out that the examination of tourist visas is quick for older travelers - but that it can be quite rigorous for young tourists.
"It's a very simple visa to apply for if you're over 50 or have children living in Australia," he explains. "You need proof of ties to Brazil, such as a job with a payslip or proof of retirement. She points out that, in some cases, it is also necessary to present financial proof (R$ 15,000 reais in an account or investment) and show that the bank account is in motion.
Young tourists, up to the age of 35, often have difficulty getting a tourist visa. "Immigration is afraid that young people will apply for a tourist visa and, once they're in Australia, want to apply for a student visa," says Elaine. "That's why they ask for a much wider range of documents. You need to prove many links with Brazil and provide proof of employment, income tax.... is very common for immigration to deny tourist visas to young people."
Because of this need for proof, the application for a tourist visa is usually more laborious and takes longer to be approved - analysis can take up to 60 days. For people over 50, the analysis is much quicker: the response takes two days or may even be immediate.
Due to the difficulty of visas for young people, Elaine warns that it is advisable to buy your ticket only after your visa has been approved. "In addition, we recommend that you apply two months in advance, in case the analysis takes a while," she advises.
